Week 7 – The Portrait Workshop

In our seventh week of photography, we focused again on portraiture, by taking advantage of the natural light from outside we experimented with images using a reflector to manipulate the light around the subject.

In this photo, the natural light enters the frame from the left, lighting up the right side of the subjects face. This left the other half considerably darker and flat, until we incorporated the the reflector into manipulating the light, in order to illuminate the darker half of his face. Some detail in this photo is lost however due to slight over exposure, particularly on his left side of his jaw, as we can not see his jawline meet up with his ear.

With this photo, we didn’t make use of the reflector, particularly because it was only the one half of the face that was covered, meaning the natural light worked well enough to create this photograph.

Week 6 – Studio Task

In the sixth week of photography we made use of a studio for taking portrait photos, the advantages of using this space was the access to space allowing us to set up a load of different lighting to create different effects in the photo.

This was the first portrait taken of me. What I like about this photo is the deep black shadows almost engulfing most of my body and half of my face, so the light in the frame draws the attention to the left side of my face. It creates for quite a mysterious effect, as my identity is half shrouded.

purple

In this photo, a purple gel was placed over the light source, to give an overall purple tint. This further amplifies the mystery of the shadows, as purple is quite a mysterious colour.

red

Here, the purple gel was replaced with a red gel. As you can see, just by changing the overlaying colour and my facial expression, we go from a moody mysterious shot, to a dark and sinister shot.

green

Finally, a green gel was applied over the light, this emerald green colour combined with my longing stare at the ceiling creates a very envious mood within the photo. envious of what however is unclear as I am staring off camera.
